My literary appreciation assignment (just my opinion)

A Deconstruction Theory in “The Scarlet Letter”

The Scarlet Letter is an 1850 romantic work of fiction in a historical setting, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is considered to be his magnum opus. Set in 17th-century Puritan Boston during the years 1642 to 1649, it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an adulterous affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity.
I think the best way to analyze The Scarlet Letter is use the deconstruction theory. Deconstruction theory in “The Scarlet Letter” is like a way in folding back the structure in the text. In one side, the main character is Hester Prynne. She is a sinner who gave birth before married and be a protagonist character. She is a tall woman with a strong, beautiful face and large dark eyes. Her firmness seen when she walked slowly and held her head high during she got her punishment. Even Hester felt angry, she never shows her feeling. Chillingworth, a doctor in Boston, say that he heard many good things about her in the town. People say that she was a good strong person with a warm heart.
And the other side, the antagonist is the people around Hester Prynne. They say that the governor is too kind to her and the punishment given to Hester Prynne is not the real punishment. People said bad things to her when they saw her in the street. They are unfriendly when she visited their house. Children follow her in town and shout at her. Some people see the scarlet letter on her breast and turn away. They only played games about churches. Sometimes they shouted bad things at her. Some people in the town want to take Hester’s daughter away, they say that Hester not teaching her the right things.
By the binary opposition above we know that Nathaniel Hawthorne wants to show us that Hester Prynne is a good person even she did a big sin in the past. He wants the readers to give sympathy to her and blame the people who punished her. In addition, Hester was rejected by the them even though she spent her life helping the sick and the poor and doing what she could to help them. By wrote this story, Nathaniel Hawthorne wants to show people in 19th century that women should had better position in a society. It also provokes the reader to the decision and value judgment on the issue of primacy of the natural or of the supernatural principles (God). Unfortunately, in that time people still do not ready for the equality. He showed it by Hester Prynne said that someday women will be the same as man.
I think that The Scarlet Letter is a good story. It brings a new idea in American life in that time. People started to open their mind and think about equality in gender because in that time, men had the higher position than women and that condition is bad for women. I also think that we’d better to judge or see other people by their kindness, not only by their sin and punished them by ourselves. Only God has a right to judge a man.
